LAS101: Introduction to the Glowforge Laser Cutter

Have you ever wanted to etch your own glass cups? How about a nice metal wall sign? Ever since its discovery in the 1960s, laser cutting has made dreams like this into achievable realities for makers. Lasers are now more accessible and affordable than ever – meaning your dream set of etched marble coasters are closer to reality than you may have realized.

LAS101 is one of our introductory laser cutting workshops, where you'll learn how to make exciting designs in a wide variety of different materials! During this workshop, we’ll cover the simple steps necessary to use the Glowforge laser cutter, as well as how to cut and etch or engrave your projects.

Select a location to enroll in a workshop, resume a quiz, or reserve equipment in your local instance of the MAP.

In this course, you'll learn:

  • How laser cutters work, what they can be used for, and who can use them.

  • Intermediate safety instructions for operating laser cutters safely and effectively, including what to do in the case of an emergency.

  • Common Glowforge laser anatomy, terms, and concepts such as power, speed, passes, flashback and the difference between engraving and vector cutting.

  • Materials that are safe to use with laser cutters, as well as those materials that are banned and that can be very dangerous to use.

  • The basics of navigating and operating the Glowforge software.

  • How to tidy up your work area when you're done.
