I never thought that something from my early childhood would become popular again. Yet here we are, with scrunchies. The scrunchies that I wore were quite boring with limited fabric materials. Today though, you can make your own out of almost any type of material you'd like! These are easy and don't require a sewing machine - or needle and thread!
With any fabric project, there are a few things to note:
Fabric has two sides - right and wrong. The right side's pattern is quite distinct and noticeable - it's the outside. The wrong side is faded and less noticeable - it's the inside.
Some fabrics don't have a noticeable right and wrong side! That's okay! Just make sure to remember which side you've decided will be the outside and which will be the inside.
You only need a few materials:
Fabric
Scissors
Safety Pin
Hot Glue or Fabric Glue
1/4" wide elastic
Let's get started!
First, cut your fabric in a strip that's 4 1/2" by 22".
Next, create a hem on the shorter ends. Lay your fabric with the right side (outside) on a flat surface. Squeeze a layer of glue along the shorter edge and fold it over.
Turn your fabric over so the right side is facing you. Fold everything in half lengthwise (like a hotdog bun) and glue together along the longer edge. You should end up with a long tube.
Turn your tube right side out. Attach the safety pin to one edge of the tube, then push it down through the middle until you can pull it out the other side. A long, skinny dowel works too, like a wooden spoon handle or chopstick.
Cut about 8-10 inches of elastic and thread it through your tube. You can poke the safety pin through one end of the elastic and thread it through - just make sure you don't lose the other end in the tube.
Tie the ends of the elastic together.
Insert one end of the tube into the other and glue the fabric together.
